Simple Syrups

Simple syrups are what separate boring drinks from cocktail recipes people actually remember. The basic concept is simple (sugar plus water), but when you infuse that base with herbs, fruit, spices, or tea, you add layers of flavor that would be impossible to achieve any other way.

I make batches of simple syrup every week because they last in the fridge and turn a five-minute cocktail into something that tastes like it came from a craft bar.

The syrups here span every season and flavor profile you can think of. I use basil and lavender for spring cocktails, peach and mint for summer cocktails, fig and cardamom for autumn cocktails, and Earl Grey and smoked tea for winter cocktails.

Most of these recipes take 10 minutes or less to make, and you’ll use them in multiple drinks throughout the week.

Store them in small glass mason jars in the fridge (or freezer for longer storage), and you’ll always be ready to make something better than whatever’s on a bar menu. These are the building blocks that make cocktail garnishes and fresh ingredients actually work together in a glass.
