Tangerine Ginger Mint Smash

Jump to Recipe Jump to Video

I have a tangerine tree in my backyard, and honestly, nothing beats walking outside to grab a few pieces of fruit and turn them into a cocktail right there on the spot.

This Tangerine Ginger Mint Smash is what happens when my garden does half the work. Fresh tangerine juice has this soft citrus sweetness that’s way more delicate than orange. Ginger syrup brings warmth and a little kick. Mint from my cocktail herb garden (that hasn’t fried in the California sun yet) adds a cool, herbal note. Gin brings botanicals that round it all out.

Tangerine Ginger Mint Smash

Why This Cocktail Works

Tangerine juice is softer than orange. Sweet, bright, slightly floral instead of super tart. I’m not even sure what kind of tangerine tree I have (mandarin? sumo?), but the juice is perfect for cocktails because it doesn’t take over. Oh, and my kids will just pick one and start eating it. They are weird like that.

Mint adds freshness. Cooling and herbal without being overwhelming.

Ginger syrup adds warmth. Keeps things from getting too sweet or one-note.

Gin adds structure. Botanicals work with the mint and citrus instead of fighting them.

Twist Variations

Make it a spritz

Top with soda water for something lighter and bubbly. Good for day drinking or when you want less booze.

Make it sweeter

Add more ginger syrup or muddle a piece of tangerine in the shaker.

Make it brighter

Use 1.25 oz tangerine juice or squeeze in some lemon.

Mocktail Version

You can keep all the flavor and freshness without the alcohol.

Replace gin with a non-alcoholic gin and add a splash of extra tangerine juice for body.

Shake as usual and serve over ice, garnishing the same way so it still feels special.

Home Bar Tips

Don’t over-muddle the mint. You want oils, not bitterness. Light pressure. Think of it as waking the leaves up, not destroying them.

Use fresh tangerine juice. Floral, bright, way better than anything from a bottle. I walk outside, pick a few tangerines, juice them. That’s it.

Shake well. Mint, ginger, and citrus need a good shake to blend right.

Try different gins. Citrus-forward or herbal gins work great here. I like gins with floral notes that play nice with tangerine.

Dehydrate tangerine wheels for cocktail garnishes. Slice thin, lay on a baking sheet, dry in the oven at 200°F for about 2-4 hours. They last forever (well, as long as they are really dried) and look better than fresh slices on a rim.

Troubleshooting

“It’s too tart.”
Add more ginger syrup or grab a sweeter tangerine. They’re not all the same.

“It’s too sweet.”
Add more tangerine juice or top with soda water.

“The mint is too strong.”
Use fewer leaves or go lighter on the muddle.

“I can’t taste the ginger.”
Add another 0.25 oz syrup or use more ginger when you make the syrup next time.

How to Make Ginger Simple Syrup

This syrup brings warmth and balance to the citrus and mint. I keep a batch in my freezer year-round because it’s so versatile in mocktail and cocktail recipes.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cup sliced fresh ginger

Instructions

Combine everything in a saucepan and simmer for 5-8 minutes. Turn off the heat and let it sit for another 10 minutes. Strain the ginger through a fine-mesh strainer, then keep the syrup in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

For a super intense flavor, you can blend the ginger into the syrup and then strain it. Make sure you double strain into a cheesecloth to get all of the particulates out.

I’m still trying to figure out how to grow ginger (I haven’t found the best place to plant it in my yard), but at least I can keep mint alive.

Cocktails Using Ginger Simple Syrup

If you’re making a batch of ginger simple syrup, here are other ways to use it:
