Apples hold their shape well during simmering and drying, which makes them perfect for cocktail garnishes. Once candied, they add gentle sweetness, subtle fruit flavor, and a polished look that pairs especially well with bourbon, brandy, whiskey, rum, and spiced cocktails.

How to Use Candied Apple Slices in Cocktails

  • Rest a slice on the rim of a rocks or coupe glass
  • Float one on top of sours or spirit-forward drinks (you can use a cocktail pick if your slice is too small or heavy)
  • Pair with cinnamon sticks, rosemary, or star anise
  • Use for fall parties, holiday cocktails, and whiskey drinks

Candied Apple Slices Recipe

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups white sugar (plus extra for dusting)
  • 2 apples
    (Any variety works. A mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp is great.)

Instructions

  1. Thinly slice the apples using a mandolin (I love this one) or a sharp knife. Aim for evenly thin slices so they dry at the same rate.
  2. In a large frying pan, combine the sugar and water over medium heat until bubbling, then reduce to a gentle simmer.
  3. Add the apple slices in a single layer if possible, trying not to overlap them.
  4. Simmer for about 30 minutes, until the apples begin to look slightly translucent.
    • They won’t turn fully clear, so don’t wait for that. Some spots may lighten more than others, and that’s normal.
  5. Transfer the slices to a parchment-lined baking sheet or your air fryer rack.
    • If you have an oven-safe wire rack, place it over parchment to catch drips and make cleanup easier, while being able to dry both sides at the same time.
  6. Dry the apples (flipping every hour or so):
    • Oven: 180°F for 2–5 hours
    • Air fryer: 165°F for 2–4 hours (I use this Air Fryer/Dehydrator combo)
      Drying time depends on slice thickness.
  7. Once mostly dry but still slightly tacky, remove from heat.
  8. Lightly sprinkle with white sugar to absorb any remaining stickiness.
