Maple Cranberry Smash

Do you want to build a snowman? Ok, well, a red snowman… with a tree in it? Enough of the pop culture references that just aren’t working. If you love a cocktail that feels festive, you will adore the Maple Cranberry Smash.

Fresh cranberries give the drink a pop of color and gentle tang, while real maple syrup adds warmth and depth in a way simple syrup just can’t match.

Vodka keeps this cocktail crisp and clean, letting the cranberry and maple shine. If you swap in gin, you get a slightly more botanical version that feels a little more wintry and complex.

Either way, this is a simple shake-and-serve drink that looks gorgeous in the glass.

Home Bar Tips

Use fresh cranberries.
They should be firm and shiny. Wrinkled cranberries tend to taste more bitter and don’t muddle as well.

Don’t skip the muddle.
Breaking open the berries releases tartness and beautiful color. Whole cranberries won’t give you that flavor.

Shake longer than you think.
Cranberry-based drinks often need a bit more dilution to balance the tartness. Shake for a solid 12–20 seconds.

Maple syrup thickness varies.
If your maple syrup is cold or extra thick, warm it slightly so it blends into the drink instead of sitting in sticky clumps at the bottom of the shaker.

Fresh lemon juice matters.
Even a small amount lifts the whole cocktail. Bottled lemon juice tends to taste flat.

Taste your cranberry juice before mixing.
100% cranberry juice is VERY tart (and delicious). Cranberry cocktail juice is sweetened, so you may want to reduce the maple syrup by 0.25 oz if you use the cranberry cocktail version and not pure cranberry juice.

What If I Don’t Have…?

No fresh cranberries?
Add an extra 0.25 oz cranberry juice. The drink will be smoother and less textured. Frozen cranberries work too—thaw before muddling.

No maple syrup?
Honey works (use the same amount), but the flavor will be floral instead of caramelly. Simple syrup works in a pinch, but you lose that warm seasonal note.

No cranberry juice?
Pomegranate juice swaps in perfectly and gives you a deeper flavor.

No vodka?
Gin brings in botanicals and leans wintery.
Light rum adds a soft fruitiness.
Non-alcoholic spirits work great too—use your favorite botanical blend.

No rocks glass?
Any short glass works. Even a stemless wine glass does the job.

No shaker?
Use a mason jar with a tight lid. Just make sure it’s REALLY sealed before shaking.

Troubleshooting

“It tastes too tart!”

  • Add another 0.25 oz maple syrup.
  • Double-check that you used the right type of cranberry juice (pure cranberry vs. cranberry cocktail makes a big difference).

“It’s too sweet.”

  • Add another 0.25 oz lemon juice.
  • Use 100% cranberry juice instead of sweetened.

“The maple sank to the bottom.”

  • Shake harder and for longer—maple syrup needs strong agitation to blend.
  • Warm the syrup a bit next time.

“The drink looks pale or washed out.”

  • Your cranberries may not have been muddled enough.
  • Add 0.25 oz more cranberry juice for richer color.
  • Use 100% cranberry juice (deep red) instead of cocktail juice (pink).

“My cranberries didn’t muddle well.”
Frozen berries often work better than underripe fresh ones—thaw first.

Add a Rosemary Twist

For a more herbal, woodsy flavor, use rosemary-infused maple syrup instead of plain maple.

  • Warm maple syrup gently on the stove (don’t boil).
  • Add 1–2 rosemary sprigs.
  • Steep for 10–20 minutes.
  • Cool completely and store in the fridge.

It adds a subtle wintery note that makes the drink feel more complex, and gives it more rosemary flavor than a rosemary garnish.

Glassware

I honestly don’t know where I got the glass in the picture. My son practices near a Crate and Barrel Outlet, so it could have come from there… or a thrift shop… or World Market. Who knows, but really any sphere cocktail glass, wine coblet, or brandy snifter will do. Here’s a few I’d grab:

A bright, festive mocktail that still feels special.

  • 0.5 oz maple syrup
  • 3–4 muddled fresh cranberries
  • 2–3 oz sparkling water

Shake the cranberry, lemon, maple, and muddled berries with ice, then strain into a glass filled with fresh ice. Top with sparkling water. It’s refreshing, lightly tart, and still brings those cozy winter notes.
