I’ll be honest—when I first started playing around with juniper simple syrup, I wasn’t sure what to do with it. My husband kept insisting we needed more juniper-forward cocktails (he’s one of those people who actually loves that piney gin bite), and I wanted something tart and seasonal without feeling like I was drinking liquid Christmas.
That’s how this drink happened.
The Juniper Cranberry Gin Sour is crisp, tart, and quietly festive without leaning sugary or heavy. It’s not trying to be a holiday punch. It’s just a really solid gin sour that happens to taste like winter.

What I love most is that the juniper doesn’t hide in the background as it does in most cocktail recipes. It’s right there alongside the cranberry, bright and present, enhancing the gin instead of covering it up.
You get that sharp red-fruit acidity from the cranberry juice, fresh lemon for balance, and the piney backbone of juniper simple syrup holding everything together.
If you add the egg white (or aquafaba), the whole thing smooths out into this velvety, polished sour with a creamy foam that makes it feel intentional. Without it, it stays bright and bracing. Both versions work—it just depends on your mood.

What Does a Juniper Cranberry Sour Taste Like?
You’ll get tart cranberry and lemon right away, followed by gentle evergreen notes from the juniper syrup. The sweetness doesn’t overpower, keeping the drink bright and refreshing rather than sticky.
With egg white (or aquafaba), the texture becomes velvety and rounded. Without it, the cocktail stays sharp and bracing. Both versions work; it just depends on your mood.
Why Juniper and Cranberry Work Together
Juniper and cranberry naturally complement each other. Cranberry brings acidity and that gorgeous deep red color, while juniper adds structure and aromatic depth. Together, they feel fresh, wintry, and balanced—especially when paired with gin’s botanical profile.
A couple drops of orange bitters can lift the whole drink, adding subtle citrus warmth without overpowering the main flavors.
Perfect for Cold Weather
This is definitely a cold-weather drink. The cranberry and juniper combination feels like winter in a glass.
But that deep red color from the cranberry juice makes it look super festive for the holidays. Thanksgiving dinner? Christmas party? New Year’s Eve? This drink works for all of it without feeling like a themed gimmick.

Glassware That Shows Off the Foam
Serve this cocktail in a chilled Nick and Nora (pictured) or a coupe glass to highlight the foam and keep the presentation clean and classic.
If you’re making the egg white version, that silky foam on top is half the appeal. Don’t hide it in a rocks glass.
Essential Bar Tools
You’ll need a Boston shaker for the dry shake (critical for building that foam), and a fine-mesh strainer for double straining so you don’t get any ice chips or pulp in your drink.
Fresh lemon juice is essential to make this cocktail work. Use a citrus juicer and squeeze it yourself. Bottled lemon juice falls flat.
