Last fall, my husband came home with a bag of blood oranges from the grocery store. I’d been making batches of ginger simple syrup for my other cocktail recipes and thought I’d try pairing them together.
So I grabbed the whiskey (we usually keep Jameson on hand for whiskey drinks or Jefferson bourbon), mixed it up, and that first sip? Way better than expected.

You get that gorgeous ruby color from the blood oranges, this warm spicy kick from the ginger, and the whiskey rounds everything out without being heavy. Takes maybe three minutes to make.
My husband loves blood oranges so much that I bought him a tiny blood orange tree to plant in our garden. Blood oranges are actually a hybrid citrus, and once the tree starts producing, I’ll have fresh blood oranges whenever I want. Until then, I’ll keep grabbing them whenever they’re in season.
Why This Cocktail Works
Blood orange brings depth you don’t get from regular oranges. It’s sweeter and has this almost berry-like quality that gives the drink richness and that color.
Ginger adds warmth without overwhelming the drink. The gentle spice balances the citrus and lifts the whiskey, feeling cozy without being heavy. Just don’t go overboard on the ginger. It will take over the drink.
Lime is the secret ingredient. Just a quarter ounce sharpens everything and keeps the drink from tipping too sweet.
Whiskey adds backbone. I usually reach for Jameson because it’s smooth and approachable, but if you want something richer, bourbon is fantastic too. The caramel and oak notes work with both the ginger and citrus.

Ways to Change It Up
Add a cinnamon stick
Toss a cinnamon stick into the shaker before you shake. It adds subtle warmth and extra spice that’s perfect for winter. No cinnamon stick? Add a tiny pinch of ground cinnamon.
Make it brighter
Increase the lime to 0.5 oz for a sharper smash with more citrus bite.
Make it sweeter
Add a splash more ginger simple syrup or a dash of honey syrup if you prefer a sweeter drink.
Mocktail Version
You have two solid options if you want to skip the alcohol.
NA Whiskey Version
Swap in non-alcoholic whiskey to keep the flavor profile close to the original.
Ginger Beer Version
Shake the blood orange, ginger syrup, and lime without whiskey. Strain into a glass and top with ginger beer. It’s spicy, citrusy, and totally refreshing. If it is too spicy, skip the ginger syrup as the ginger beer already has a kick. Or replace the ginger beer with soda water.

Tips for Making This at Home
Use fresh blood oranges. The bottled versions don’t come close to the color or flavor of fresh-squeezed juice. I use this citrus juicer and it makes the whole process so much easier.
Shake hard. You want good aeration and a smoother drink, so really give it a good shake.
Taste before pouring. Blood oranges vary in sweetness and tartness depending on where they’re from and how ripe they are. If yours are super tart, add a touch more ginger syrup. If they’re super sweet, bump up the lime slightly.
Garnish with intention. Candied ginger or a blood orange wheel makes it look good. If you want to get fancy, I use these rocks glasses and they show off the color well.
Use clear ice if you have it. Totally optional, but if you want your drink to look polished, these clear ice cube molds or sphere molds help.
Troubleshooting
“It’s too tart.”
Add a touch more ginger syrup or regular simple syrup, or reduce the lime.
“It’s too sweet.”
Increase the lime slightly or use a higher-proof whiskey for more backbone.
“I can’t taste the ginger.”
Increase the syrup or add a thin slice of fresh ginger to the shaker when you shake.
“The whiskey is too strong.”
Add more blood orange juice or swap to bourbon for a smoother finish.
